Only Service Animals Allowed
The ADA defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by a state or local government.
Service animals perform some of the functions and tasks that the individual with a disability cannot perform for him or herself. Guide dogs are one type of service animal, used by some individuals who are blind. This is the type of service animal with which most people are familiar. But there are service animals that assist persons with other kinds of disabilities in their day-to-day activities. Some examples include:
- Alerting persons with hearing impairments to sounds.
- Pulling wheelchairs or carrying and picking up things for persons with mobility impairments.
- Assisting persons with mobility impairments with balance.
Animals that do not meet the above definition of service animals are prohibited on campus.
Audience members can take photographs from their seats only. A photograph of each candidate receiving his/her diploma will be taken by Picture Man of Hawaii. To view and order your graduation diploma and posed portrait, go to pmoh.com, select our ceremony, and register to get your proofs online and by mail.
The University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu (UHWO) reserves the right to photograph/videotape participants and guests at commencement for purposes of publicizing the University's programs or for any other lawful purpose, including the right to print, publish, broadcast, and use as appropriate for public information without additional consideration or compensation. All photographs/videos become the property of UHWO. Many of the photographs taken that day will be added to the UHWO Flickr site.
Vendors selling flower lei will be on campus during the commencement ceremonies. The vendors will be located on the grass area in front of the Dining Commons.
A First Aid station will be near the Library and at the E building. In case of emergency, medical or otherwise, please inform Campus Security or a staff member wearing yellow lei.
