Veteran Affairs Certification Process

NEW STUDENTS - FIRST TIME USERS OF VA BENEFITS

  1. Submit an online application for VA benefits. To determine which benefit you qualify for, please contact the VA at 1-888-442-4551 or visit their website.
  2. Apply for admission by the appropriate deadline and be admitted to UH West O‘ahu. Submit an online application and application fee to begin the admissions process.
  3. Upon receiving an acceptance letter from the University and having submitted an online application to the VA, please contact the Office of the Registrar to submit the appropriate paperwork to begin the certification process.
  4. If you are using VA benefits for the first time submit a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility. If you have not yet received a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA but would like to start your benefits, provide a copy of your application VA Form 22-1990, 22-1990E, or 22-5490.
  5. Upon registering for classes, submit the appropriate Veteran Student Enrollment Forms.

TRANSFER STUDENTS - PREVIOUSLY USED VA BENEFITS AT ANOTHER INSTITUTION

  1. Apply for admission by the appropriate deadline and be admitted to UH West O‘ahu. Submit an online application and application fee to begin the admissions process.
  2. Upon receiving an acceptance letter from the University and having submitted an online application to the VA, please contact the Office of the Registrar to submit the appropriate paperwork to begin the certification process.
  3. If you have previously used benefits and are transferring from another institution, submit a copy of one of the following after having submitted original form to the Regional Processing Office in Muskogee, Oklahoma:
    1. Individuals receiving benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, MGIB-AD, MGIB-SR, VEAP, and REAP will need to submit a VA Form 22-1995 “Request For Change of Program or Place of Training”
    2. Individuals receiving benefits under the Dependents’ Education Assistance Program will need to submit a VA Form 22-5495 instead of Form 22-1995.
  4. Upon registering for classes, submit the appropriate Veteran Student Enrollment Forms.

 VOCATIONAL REHABILIATION STUDENTS

  1. If you are not a continuing UH West O‘ahu student, you must apply for admission by the appropriate deadline and be admitted. Submit an online application and application fee to begin the admissions process.
  2. Contact your counselor at Vocational Rehabilitation to send a VA Form 28-1905 verifying and approving your educational benefits.
  3. Upon registering for classes, submit the appropriate Veteran Student Enrollment Forms.

CONTINUING STUDENTS

Upon registering for classes, submit the appropriate Veteran Student Enrollment Forms. Recertification is not automatic and enrollment information forms must be submitted for the appropriate semester prior to being certified.
