UH West Oʻahu will welcome K-12 and higher education administrators, math faculty, and teacher preparation faculty on Thursday, Nov. 9, as it hosts the math summit Best Practices for Math Transitions.

The statewide summit will help participants gain a clearer understanding of best practices in math instruction for students transitioning from elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, high school to gateway courses in higher education, and success in higher education programs. The summit is being convened by Hawaiʻi P-20 Partnerships for Education, a partnership led by the Executive Office on Early Learning, the state Department of Education, and the UH System.

Among P-20’s programs are an effort to better align K-12 education to higher education, including the holding of summits on Math and on College and Career readiness in English Language Arts. UH West Oʻahu previously hosted one of the math summits in 2016 and in September was the site of STEM Pathways Calculus Convening, which was also sponsored by P-20 and involved UHWO faculty.

This year’s summit will include a presentation by UH West Oʻahu’s Dr. Laurie James, an assistant professor of mathematics, and Carli Masik, a UHWO mathematics lecturer.  They will give a 12:30 p.m. presentation titled “Using Technology in your Math Classroom: An Active Learning Approach.”

James and Masik will discuss how technology, when used appropriately, can enhance and promote learning opportunities for every student, and talk about free Internet-based programs that can be incorporated into mathematics lessons.  Programs such as Plickers, Nearpod, ClassFlow and Google Classroom will be demonstrated.

The math summit is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with registration in C208.
