The Pueo Fitness Center is opening its doors for students, faculty, and staff hoping to get a workout in while on campus.

The new fitness center officially began operations on Tuesday as UH West Oʻahu’s new Nāulu Center for Culture, Engagement & Well-Being celebrated its official opening. The Nāulu Center, located on the Campus Center Plaza, will feature activities and programs that build and sustain a community of learners.

The Pueo Fitness Center sits off the side of the Nāulu Center, packing state-of-the-art exercise machines and free weights into its 500 square feet. The fitness center also serves as the new home for UH West Oʻahu’s Intramurals Sports program headed by Ryan Perreira, who will have an office in the fitness Center.

The fitness center is slowly ramping up operations, with the first workouts scheduled for Thursday. To use the fitness center, people must sign a standard waiver and agree to sanitize machines and tidy the area after workouts. Perreira said wipes, rags and cleaners will be available for use.

Students may sign up for one-hour workout appointments on Starfish (MySuccess) (search for “UHWO”), with a limit of three appointments per week. Faculty and staff must email imwest@hawaii.edu to request appointments.

Perreira said no more than 10 people will be allowed in for workouts at any one time and that training or guidance on different workouts and machines will be available.  The Freemotion Fitness machines designed for cardio and strength include state-of-the-art pulley machines, treadmills (one of which can be adjusted to a 30-degree incline), and two bikes — one is capable of simulating road courses with Google Maps.

There is also a shower in the back of the Nāulu Center for a quick rinse after workouts.
