The UH West Oʻahu University Chorus and the University Band will each give a pair of performances with students, faculty, staff, and the community invited to attend the free concerts.

The University Chorus led by director Justin Kaʻapu will perform at the Kapolei Choral Festival, which features Hawaiian music performed at 7 p.m., Friday, April 20, on the Kapolei High School Plaza. The chorus will perform “E Nānā Kākou  I Nā Manu”, an arrangement by Herbert Mahelona, with the Kapolei Hurricane Singers.

The University Chorus will perform again 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 3, in the Kapolei High School Choir Room. The program includes “When Jesus Wept” by William Billings; “Bring Me Little Water, Sylvie,” an African American folk song arranged by Kirby Shaw; “E Nānā Kākou I Nā Manu,” and “For the beauty of the earth” by John Rutter.

The University Band will perform under the direction of Chadwick Kamei, Pearl City High School director of bands, and longtime band veteran Michael Nakasone. There will also be two guest conductors, Tori Kawasaki from Ilima Intermediate School, who will conduct “Olympiada” by Samuel Hazo, and Don Tsuha, Moanalua Middle School director of bands, who will guest conduct “Highlights from ‘The Music Man’.”

The University Band’s concerts will also feature a UH West O’ahu junior, Kamakani Palakiko, who will sing a special rendition of Andy Cummings’ composition, “Waikīkī”. Also featured on the program are songs such as “The William Tell Overture” by Gioachino Rossini; “Italian Rhapsody” and “One Life Beautiful” by Julie Giroux; and “The Melody Shop” march by Karl King.   

The first of the two concerts by the University Band is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 25, at C208 Campus Center.  The band will perform again at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, at Pearlridge Center.
