“Encountering Internationalization in the Writing Classroom: Resistant Teaching and Learning Strategies,” an article co-authored by Yasmine Romero, UH West Oʻahu Assistant Professor of English, has been published by Across the Disciplines, a refereed academic journal devoted to language, learning, and academic writing.

Romero served as lead author for the piece, which delves into how student conceptions of internationalization directly impact their engagement with course content in WAC (Writing Across the Curriculum)/WID (Writing in the Disciplines) classrooms. These impacts, the authors argue, equate global literacy with English literacy, erasing the experiences of students from international backgrounds. They propose teaching and learning strategies with the potential to bring the outside, or international perspectives and experiences, into the writing classroom. Romero co-wrote the article with Ann Shivers-McNair of the University of Arizona.

The article appeared in a special issue of Across the Disciplines that explored internationalizing the WAC/WID Curriculum. Across the Disciplines is one of the publications on the WAC Clearinghouse website, an open-access, educational website supported by a number of donors and sponsors, including Colorado State University.

Romeroʻs article is available through the Across the Disciplines website as well as DSpace, which is a repository of works by UH West Oʻahu faculty, researchers, and others.
