NEW SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS, INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

2008-2009 UHWO J. Edgar Hoover Memorial Scholarship
UH West O‘ahu (UHWO) is proud to announce the 2008-2009 J. Edgar Hoover Memorial Scholarship. This award was presented to UHWO by The Former Agents of the FBI Foundation and acknowledges academic achievement and leadership for students in the Bachelors of Arts in Public Administration, Justice Administration concentration.

Eligibility Criteria
1. Classified student in Bachelors of Arts in Public Administration, Justice Administration concentration.
2. At least half-time enrollment (minimum 6 credit enrollment).
3. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Frances Davis Teaching Award
Nominate an outstanding faculty member for the Frances Davis Teaching Award!

Candidates must be full-time instructors (I2) or assistant professors (I3), part-time faculty, or lecturers in good standing. Associate and “Full” Professors are not eligible for this award. The award-winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize.

Nominations may come from any faculty member or student at UH West O‘ahu and can be sent to hallston@hawaii.edu.

State Legislative Internship Program
Applications are now being accepted for the State Legislative Internship for spring 2009 (January-April) when the Legislature is in session. Students will have an opportunity to work for a senator or representative and learn about the legislative process in Hawai‘i. To be eligible, students may come from any concentration field and have a minimum 3.0 GPA with senior standing (at least 89 total credits).

The internship includes a 35-40 hour work week and will earn a total of 15 credits: WI Puba 490 (6 credit; not to be confused with the regular 3 credit Puba 490 Administrative Senior Practicum), Soc 496, Pols 496, and Puba 496, and will receive a stipend of $1500. Students may not be enrolled in other credits during this internship.

Completed applications should be emailed to Dr. Michael Hallstone (hallston@hawaii.edu) by Friday, Nov. 7, 2008. Completed applications will be reviewed following the deadline and the UHWO Internship Committee, headed by Dr. Michael Hallstone, will interview eligible applicants for three possible positions.

Spooky Movie Social
The UHWO Sociology and Anthropology Clubs are sponsoring a Spooky Movie Social on Oct. 24 from 5 - 8:30 p.m. in E-104 and the Kuhialoko lanai (E-building). Free pizza, drinks, and a costume contest (two prize categories - spookiest and original). Prizes given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Join us if you dare!

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Need Financial Aid?
You can still apply for the current school year by submitting the 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or pick up the application at the Student Services Office. Make sure to indicate the UH West O‘ahu school code 014315 on your FAFSA. For assistance completing the FAFSA or for questions regarding the application process, contact the Financial Aid office at (808) 454-4700 or via email at finaid@uhwo.hawaii.edu.

Need financial aid for next year? Submit your FAFSA prior to April 1, 2009 to increase your chances of obtaining as much eligible aid as possible!

Use MyUH Portal to check on your Financial Aid!
Log in to your MyUH Portal and click on the “Financial Aid” link to check on any outstanding requirements needed to process your financial aid, to read any important financial aid messages and to view your financial aid award for the academic year. To check on the status of your financial aid disbursement or refund, select the “view charges/make payment” link to see if any funds have been applied to your student account.
