The mentees will be at the 7th grade level, and the program not only focuses on college access, but college readiness. Mentors will work approximately 10 hours per week at a rate of $11.45/hr.

Our future is looking bright here at West Oahu. So bright that the Service Learning club passed out custom imprinted UHWO sunglasses to students & faculty who attended the 2012 Spring Pa‘ina. Over 50 students signed up for the initial open forum to discuss the Service Learning initiative here at UHWO.

There we will gauge civic interest, discuss current volunteer opportunities island-wide, and go over the Students In Service option which students can exchange volunteer hours for tuition money. Stay tuned to see when the meeting will be held.

On January 16, 2012, The Family Courts Detention Center in Honolulu invited volunteers to come help with a restoriation project. The former detention center will be used as a community center in the near future for neighborhood residents.

Volunteers from Kapiolani Community College, Honolulu Community College, Hawaii Pacific University, Maryknoll, Department of Justice, & the Boys & Girls Club spent an entire day helping out. Weeds were pulled out from the courtyard, painting in preparation for a wall mural was done, and new furniture was installed.

After few hours of service the volunteers were all able to talk story over a home cooked lunch.

True Engagements in Service Learning Activities, otherwise known as TESLA, is a new student run organization at UHWO. Centered around civic engagement and service learning projects, the club will be used to promote volunteer oportunities around the island.

Now recruiting new members. Officer applications and the club constitution can be picked up from Todd Jordan (todd9@hawaii.edu) in B-106.

UHWO is still looking for students who are interested in being a vital asset to their communities through acts of civic engagement. The Leeward side of the island has many opportunities for volunteer work, many of which would be considered “Service Learning”.
