NEW FACULTY AND STAFF AT UH WEST O‘AHU CAMPUS

 

 

With a new four-year degree program beginning this Fall, UH West O'ahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni announced the addition of new staff and faculty.

 

New Staff

Kay Ono is the new Interim Academic Program Officer in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She comes to us from Leeward Community College where she is an assistant professor in the Business Technology Program. She has MA and BS from Loma Linda University and extensive experience in curriculum development and revision, program review and accreditation.

 

Nancy Purcille recently joined UHWO as articulation coordinator. Purcille was an articulation officer for, and is a graduate of, UC Berkeley. 

 

James Kimo Yamaguchi fills the newly created position of auxiliary/facilities manager. Yamaguchi comes to the UHWO campus from UH Mānoa and is a graduate of the University of Portland.

 

New Faculty

Joseph Bariyanga, associate professor at Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., has a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Montreal and joins UHWO as assistant professor in chemistry. Bariyanga earned his M.S. in chemistry from the University of Quebec at Montreal and B.S. from the National University of Rwanda. 

 

Jennifer Basham, doctoral candidate and Hawaiian language instructor at the University of Hawai’i-Mānoa, joins UHWO as assistant professor in contemporary Hawaiian culture. Basham earned her M.A. in history and B.A. in Hawaiian studies from the University of Hawai’i–Mānoa. 

 

Evelyn Cox, affiliate faculty at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, joins UHWO as assistant professor in biological sciences. Cox earned her doctorate in biology from the University of New Mexico, M.S. in zoology from the University of Hawai’i–Mānoa and B.S. in biology from Stanford University.

 

Linda Furuto, a graduate of Punahou School and currently with the Asia/Pacific Leadership Program at the East-West Center, joins UHWO as assistant professor in mathematics. Furuto, a doctoral candidate from UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, received her M.A. in education from Harvard University Graduate School of Education and B.A. in mathematics education from Brigham Young University (Provo).

 

Margo Hanson, is the new Librarian II. She recently completed a Master of Library and Information Science at UH Mānoa. She earned a BA in English at UC Berkeley.

 

Jeanne Marie Iorio of New York and a doctoral candidate from Columbia University will sign on as assistant professor in early childhood education. Iorio earned her M.A. in education from Harvard University and B.S. in early childhood education and B.A. in dance from the University of Maryland (College Park).

 

Richard Langford is currently a professor of education at the University of Redlands in Ca., and joins UHWO as assistant professor in psychology. Langford earned his doctorate in school/clinical child psychology from the University of Oregon and a B.A. in psychology from San Diego State University.

 

Sa’iliemanu Lilomaiava-Doktor, an assistant professor in Pacific Island Studies at the University of Hawaii-Mānoa, joins UHWO as assistant professor in contemporary Pacific Island Studies. Lilomaiava-Doktor received her doctorate in geography, M.A. in Pacific Islands studies and a graduate certificate in population studies from the University of Hawai’i - Mānoa. She earned a B.A. in geography and linguistics from the University of Newcastle (Australia).

 

Brenda Machosky is in the Fellow in the Humanities Program at Stanford University and signs on as assistant professor in literature. Machosky earned her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; M.A. in English literature from San Francisco State University; and B.A. from State University of New York at Stony Brook.

 

Julia Myers, adjunct instructor at Chaminade University, joins UHWO as assistant professor in elementary education. Myers received her doctorate in education from Montana State University, M.A. in math from St. Louis University, and B.S. in mathematics from Purdue University.

 

Amy Nishimura, faculty lecturer at Stony Brook University in Writing and Rhetoric, joins UHWO as assistant professor in English. She earned her PhD in Comparative Literature, a MA in English from Cal State Polytechnic University and a BA in English at UH Mānoa.

 

Jonathan Schwartz, a lecturer in elementary education at the University of Arizona South, joins UHWO as assistant professor in education. Schwartz earned his doctorate from University of Arizona, M.S. from Nova University, and B.S. in business marketing from Ithaca College.

Awakuni said the number of full-time positions for the new fiscal year will grow from 69 to 85. “UH West O’ahu is going to be more than just a new physical campus but a new academic community providing relevant service to the public,” Awakuni said.
