Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, academic performance, and/or financial need. The following are scholarship programs that are offered at the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu (UHWO).

1st Year Achievement Scholarship*
Established to support and commend graduating high school seniors for their involvement in extracurricular activities while still pursuing academic excellence. The applicant must be admitted for the 2013 fall semester and enrolled for at least 12 credits for the fall and spring semester. The deadline to apply for the 2013-2014 academic year is May 3, 2013.

Centennial Scholarship Program
This program applies to students entering the university starting with the fall of 2007. The eligibility criteria includes: graduation from a Hawaiʻi high school in May 2007 or later; have a high school GPA of at least 3.8 or 1800 score on the three-part SAT Reasoning Test (or 27 composite score on the ACT) at the time of application to UHWO; admitted and will attend as a freshman in the fall semester after graduation; will enroll as a full-time student (12 credits or more) at UHWO. Chancellor’s Award*
This award acknowledges academic achievement, leadership, and community service. Eligibility criteria includes: at least half-time enrollment (6 credits); New students must have a GPA of at least a 3.75; Transfer students must have a transfer GPA of at least a 3.75; Continuing or Returning UHWO students must have a UHWO GPA of at least 3.75. Charles E. Hemenway Scholarship*
The applicant must demonstrate the following: financial need (via completion of a FAFSA), character and qualities indicative of good citizenship. The applicant must be a resident of Hawaiʻi, enrolled at least half-time (6 credits) and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. To apply, log on to www.star.hawaii.edu. The deadline to apply for the 2012-2013 academic year is May 11, 2012.

Delta Construction Corporation Endowed Scholarship at UH West Oʻahu
This scholarship is to assist students enrolled in any area of study at the University with their cost of attendance. Applicants must be enrolled at least half-time with 6 or more credits at UHWO & have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, but no FAFSA is required. Preference shall be given to students intending to pursue a degree in engineering as well as to those students who reside in the West Oahu region.

Hawaii Veterans Memorial Fund*
To be eligible for this fund, the applicant must demonstrate the following: financial need (via completion of a FAFSA), character and qualities indicative of good citizenship, commitment to serve Hawaii and its people. The student must be a resident of Hawaiʻi, enrolled at full-time (12 credits) and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. To apply, log on to www.star.hawaii.edu. Henry & Dorothy Castle Memorial Early Childhood Education Scholarship*
The purpose of this fund is to encourage and assist students seeking a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences - Education in Early Childhood Education at UHWO in hopes that the student will remain in Hawaiʻi to teach. The applicant must demonstrate financial need and be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits). No FAFSA is required. To apply, log on to www.star.hawaii.edu. The deadline to apply for the 2012-2013 academic year is May 11, 2012.

Money for Humanities Students - The OWG Humanities Scholarship
This scholarship is geared toward continuing students in any Humanities concentration: English, Hawaiian and Pacific Studies, History, or Philosophy. Applicants for the scholarship(s) may be either full- or part-time students at the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu and have a respectable grade point average of at least a 2.5. Both merit and need will be taken into consideration in awarding the scholarship(s). To apply, write a three-paragraph essay describing your educational plans and why you are deserving of $500 in aid. Applications must be signed and submitted to any of the following professors: Professors Basham, Boylan, Chock, Chun, Cordy, Lilomaiava-Doktor, Machosky, Nishimura, Orr, Rosenfeld, or Rosenlee. The deadline to apply for the 2012-2013 academic year has yet to be determined. Please check back later for updates.

Native Hawaiian Tuition Waiver*
The applicant must demonstrate the following: financial need (via completion of a FAFSA), Native Hawaiian ancestry as determined by the University of Hawaiʻi System Application Form (Admission Application). The applicant must also be a resident of Hawaiʻi and be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits). To apply, log on to www.star.hawaii.edu. The deadline to apply for the 2012-2013 academic year is May 11, 2012.

Osher Reentry Scholarship Fund*
The purpose of the Osher Reentry Scholarship Fund is to provide scholarships for tuition costs to assist reentry students between the ages of approximately 25-50, whose collegiate studies have been interrupted by circumstances beyond their control for approximately five years, and who are resuming their studies to complete their first undergraduate baccalaureate degree in any area of study. Que-Andrada Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship is to assist students enrolled at the University with their cost of attendance who have demonstrated volunteerism and/or participation in activities related to the Philippines and/or with the Filipino community. Applicants must be enrolled at full-time (12 or more credits) at UHWO and have a cumulative grade point average of a 3.0 or above. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, but no FAFSA required.

Ralph Miwa Scholarship*
Established in 1994 in the memory of Dr. Ralph Miwa, who was instrumental in the founding of the University of Hawaii – West Oahu (formerly West Oahu College) and served as chancellor from 1976-1986. Eligibility criteria includes: at least half-time enrollment (6 credits); must have completed a minimum of 12 credits at UHWO with a GPA of at least 3.75. To apply, log on to www.star.hawaii.edu. Regents and Presidential Scholarships*
The UH Board of Regents established the Regents and Presidential Scholarships to support students at any UH campus, with a record of outstanding academic achievement. Regents Scholars receive a full tuition waiver for four years of undergraduate study, and Presidential Scholars receive a full tuition waiver for two years of undergraduate study. All scholars receive $4,000 a year and a one-time travel grant of $2,000. The Regents and Presidential Scholarships are administered by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. (The application is now closed for the 2012-2013 academic year. The availability of the scholarship for next year will be announced through the UHWO West Press.)

Ruth E. Black Scholarship*
This award is available to classified students enrolled at least half-time. The applicant must be in good academic standing and demonstrate the potential for academic growth and achievement. Preference shall be given to sons and daughters of engineers, contractors and construction workers. To apply, log on to www.star.hawaii.edu. The deadline to apply for the 2012-2013 academic year is May 11, 2012.

Schuler Family Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship is to help increase access to the University by supporting high school graduates of Campbell, Kapolei, Nanakuli and Waianae High Schools with their cost of attendance at UHWO. Applicants must be enrolled at full-time (12 or more credits) at UHWO & have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or above. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, but no FAFSA is required. Preference shall be given to high school graduates of Kapolei, Campbell, Waianae and Nanakuli High Schools and to applicants who demonstrate participation in community service activities, including volunteering for organizations or programs serving the West Oahu community.

State of Hawaiʻi B Plus Scholarship
This scholarship is geared toward students who graduate from a Hawaiʻi public high school in the Spring of 2006 or later. The student must have a final high school GPA of at least a 3.0, be a resident of Hawaiʻi with exceptional financial need (eligible for a Federal Pell Grant), and enrolled at least half-time (6 credits). Completion of a FAFSA is required. Students need not submit a separate application for this fund. Awards will be determined by the Financial Aid Office.

Scholarship Bulletin Board
The Scholarship Bulletin Board is an online list of external scholarships that are sent to UHWO by Businesses, Financial Institutions, Foundations, Government and State Agencies, etc. This list is continuously updated whenever our office is notified of new scholarship opportunities.
