Ka ʻUmeke Nōweo

March 2017

Ka ʻUmeke Nōweo. A Bright Mind. A metaphor for a mind eager to learn, be filled with knowledge, and to shine from within.

I am honored to have the privilege to be your Chancellor, to be your partner in our collective efforts to strengthen the educational ʻauwai for the communities and families in Leeward and Central Oʻahu, across this paeʻāina of Hawaiʻi, and beyond.

Advancing a community of skilled professionals and leaders is a vital mission of UH West Oʻahu (UHWO). To ensure that we meet this goal, our faculty and staff continue to cultivate unique and differentiated learning opportunities through advancing an integrated and interdisciplinary curriculum of dynamic learning and teaching, discovery and innovation, and engagement with community partners. Indeed, we believe that “Learning, Discovering, and Engaging is the pathway to 21st Century leadership!” This is our value proposition! We know that if we live into these values, if we do it well, 30 years from now, our legacy will be one of great prosperity! Prosperity born from investing in people who do extraordinary things!

Cyber Security Center at UH West O‘ahu

An example of extraordinary endeavors is our UH West Oʻahu Cyber Security program that was recently highlighted in Hawaii Business Magazine.

The work of faculty, staff and students in our Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management program has been recognized by Value Colleges, which ranked UH West O‘ahu as having among the 50 best value online homeland security and emergency management degrees. Hulo!!

Additionally, our graduates are doing extraordinary work in and for our community. As proud “Pueo Alumnus”, they have elected new officers and welcome graduates and friends of UHWO to join the Alumni Association. New officers include: President Shannon Takai (working in the DOE), Vice President Mahealani Kahala (worked at the State Legislature), Secretary Kelli Maeno (working at UHWO), and Treasurer Brandon Carlos (working at UHWO).

We are all proud to be Pueo Strong! As a member of the UHWO ʻOhana we know that wherever we go, our core value of Poʻokela – Educational Excellence guides our good work!

E mālama pono!
